Hello. My name is [YOUR NAME], and I am calling to urge Senator [NAME] to support SB 2. As a member of the Jewish Center for Justice community, we know it is our moral obligation to ensure that all individuals feel safe from gun violence. We know that, if passed, SB 2 would save countless lives by regulating who can publicly carry firearms and creating gun-free zones. Thank you.

In the first few weeks of 2023, our country has witnessed mass shootings that have devastated communities, accidental shootings by children due to poor firearm security by parents, and shootings stemming from cases of domestic violence. To say that we cannot solve this problem is to dishonor the tens of thousands of innocent lives that have been senseless gun violence.

What is JCJ advocating for?

We call upon the California Legislature to pass Senate Bill 2 which was referred to the rules committee on January 31, 2023.

The Jewish Center for Justice is helping to mobilize the Jewish community and other communities of faith in an effort to protect Californians against gun violence.  In recent years we have witnessed a dramatic increase in mass shootings, after which thoughts and prayers are offered by elected officials. But thoughts and prayers aren’t enough to stem the endemic of gun violence in our nation. After the Supreme Court overturned a New York law regulating the public carrying of firearms.  This bill would make urgently necessary fixes to update the standards and process for obtaining a public carry permit in California. It would:

  • Enhance the existing licensing system ensuring those permitted to carry firearms in public are responsible law-abiding individuals.
  • Protect children by setting a minimum age requirement of 21 years of age to obtain a concealed weapon, CCW, license.
  • Advance stronger training requirements ensuring the proper handling, loading, unloading, and storage of firearms.
  • Identify certain sensitive public spaces to establish safe community places where people should expect freedom from gun violence.
