Sample script:
Hello, my name is [your name]. I’m calling today from the Jewish Center for Justice to urge [name of Assembly Member or Senator] to support SB 1160 and SB 1253, which would require gun owners to register their firearms annually, and to maintain an unexpired Firearm Safety Certificate. As a constituent of California and a Jewish person who believes in the Talmudic teaching that “anyone who saves one life, it is as if they have saved an entire world,” I urge [the Assembly Member or Senator’s name] to vote for these bills in support of gun violence prevention. Thank you for your consideration.
What is JCJ advocating for?
SB 1160 and SB 1253 would:
- Require all firearm owners register their guns with the state by paying a small fee that would go towards the enforcement of the firearm registry.
- Require all the individuals who possess a firearm and those who move to California with a firearm to maintain a valid and unexpired Firearm Safety Certificate.
Why are we advocating for firearm safety measures?
JCJ is advocating for support for SB 1160 and SB 1253 because unregistered firearms pose a great risk to the public at large. Further, maintaining firearm safety is an important part of owning a firearm, in addition to having proper paperwork for a firearm. Read more about our position on Gun Violence Prevention.
