Sample script:

Hello, my name is [Your Name] and I’m calling as a member of the Jewish Center for Justice in zip code [your zip code].

I am urging [name of representative] to vote for AB 1655, which protects low-income families from losing welfare if a family member is unlawfully detained in an immigration facility. Right now, unlawful detention by ICE can cause families to lose vital assistance. AB 1655 prevents families from being penalized for unlawful detentions.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

What is JCJ advocating for?

AB 1655 would:

  • Classify individuals unlawfully detained by immigration as “temporarily absent” from the home, allowing their family to continue receiving benefits.
  • Requires counties to provide families with information and instructions to file misconduct reports to classify their loved ones as “unlawfully detained”.

Why are we advocating for immigrant rights?

The Jewish Center for Justice believes in the inherent dignity and equality of every individual, as reflected in the teaching that all humans are created b’tzelem Elohim—in the image of God. Guided by this principle, we stand firmly in support of AB 1655, legislation that safeguards the welfare assistance of low-income families with loved ones unlawfully detained in immigration facilities in California.
