“Hi, my name is [your name]. I’m calling today to urge [name of Assembly Member] to pass the Senate Bill 252. This bill would take a significant step forward in the fight against the catastrophic impacts of climate change. The Jewish tradition calls on us to act as stewards of the earth and its environment. This principle, one of the highest values in Judaism, guides our support of efforts at every level of government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, invest in alternative energy sources, and protect vulnerable populations most affected by environmental injustices. Thank you.
Our planet stands on the brink of catastrophe. The most vulnerable face the greatest danger. Sea levels are rising. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and costly. Storms are growing more violent. The world is quickly approaching an annual temperature rise that will trigger devastating changes to our environment with “rapid and far-reaching” consequences. According to the United Nations’ climate agency, we have less than a decade to reverse the most devastating impacts of climate change.
Our most vulnerable populations are already bearing the brunt of this crisis — and they will continue to suffer disproportionately until we transform our approach to climate policy and sustainable infrastructure.
What is JCJ advocating for?
SB 252, introduced in the California Senate, harnesses the power of California’s public investment funds, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), to divest from fossil fuels. SB 252 would encourage pro-climate investment, setting a standard that could influence how trillions more dollars in investments are apportioned. SB 252 ends California’s contradictory policy of being a leader in the fight against climate change, while simultaneously investing billions of dollars of state funds directly into the fossil fuel corporations that are the leading cause of climate change.
Call your state Senator and urge them to support SB 252 as a moral issue for the future of our state and planet.
