In response to news that Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire-hostage deal on Wednesday, January 15th, the Jewish Center for Justice issued the following statement:

As the details of the hostage deal unfold, we are reminded of the profound weight carried by each decision. The process, like those before it, progresses in phases that are as morally complex as they are necessary. While the disparity in the exchange—releasing many prisoners, including those convicted of serious crimes, for a few individuals kidnapped in brutality—feels deeply unjust, our unwavering values guide us.

The Jewish commitment to pikuach nefesh, the sacred duty to save lives, calls us to act in the face of unimaginable pain. Behind every number is a story, a family enduring 15 months of separation marked by anguish and hope. These are not just statistics—they are our brothers and sisters, parents, children, and dearest friends.

This negotiation shines a harsh light on the grim realities of confronting terrorist organizations. Yet, it also underscores the resilience of a democratic society that values every human life above all else. We remain steadfast: we will do whatever it takes to bring our people home—alive.

Let this moment ignite a renewed commitment to justice, security, and enduring peace. While we affirm Israel’s right to act decisively against threats, we also reflect on the universal longing for a future free from terror and violence.

We extend deep gratitude to Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his relentless dedication over these 15 months. Yet, we must also rise above the temptation to politicize this agreement. To do so dishonors the pain and resilience of those whose lives are forever changed by these events. Let compassion and dignity take precedence over division.

May this chapter inspire humanity’s collective journey toward a world where every life is valued and peace prevails.
