Voter Guide: Proposition 50 in California
On November 4, 2025, California voters will be asked to vote in a special election to decide Proposition 50, a ballot measure that would reshape how the state’s legislative districts are drawn.
While redistricting may sound inconsequential, the stakes could not be higher: Prop 50 is about fair representation, voter empowerment, and safeguarding democracy against coordinated voter suppression efforts happening across the country.
What Is Prop 50?
Prop 50 proposes a new independent redistricting process in California. Its goal is to create fair, representative maps that reflect the state’s communities, not political interests. This reform comes as a direct response to voter suppression and gerrymandering tactics we’ve seen in places like Texas, where political leaders have manipulated district lines to weaken voter power.
Why It Matters
- Fair Representation: Prop 50 ensures every community in California has a fair chance to elect leaders who reflect their values and needs.
- Countering Suppression: By strengthening transparency and fairness in redistricting, Prop 50 pushes back against nationwide efforts to silence voters.
- Protecting Democracy: This measure affirms that California will not stay silent in the face of voter suppression elsewhere. Instead, it will lead with reforms that promote access and integrity.
Why JCJ Supports Prop 50
At the Jewish Center for Justice, we believe democracy thrives when every voice is heard and every vote counts. Prop 50 aligns with our mission to advance justice and defend democratic values. Supporting Prop 50 is not simply about California, it is about setting a national example of what fairness and accountability look like.

Top 5 myths about the “No on Prop 50” Campaign
Myth 1: Prop 50 is just a partisan power grab.
Truth: Prop 50 is about protecting democracy and is a clear response to the gerrymandering we saw in Texas. It is not partisanship. It ensures California uses its power to not by silenced voter suppression in other states like Texas.
Myth 2: Prop 50 undermines the Citizens Redistricting Commission.
Truth: This is a temporary measure for extraordinary times. After 2030, the independent commission resumes its work. Prop 50 is a safeguard, NOT a replacement. Its also important to note that many blue states created independent commissions while red states like Texas created partisan ones. What California is doing is make sure the playing field is leveled.
Myth 3: The ballot title is misleading.
Truth: The Legislative Analyst’s Office has provided a clear, transparent explanation. Prop 50 is straightforward: it’s about protecting California voters from being disenfranchised in the 2026 midterms and the 2028 general by the partisan actions of other states.
Myth 4: Prop 50 will break apart communities.
Truth: Analyses show that district shifts are carefully designed to maintain fairness and community integrity.
Myth 5: Prop 50 opens the door to permanent political map-drawing.
Truth: Prop 50 has a clear sunset. In the language it states that after 2030, redistricting authority returns to the independent commission. This is a one-time measure for a crisis moment in our democracy.
